If you think about tube manufacture, tiny little wires spun around clumsily designed spacers, insulated with fragile oxides and hand-assembled by ex-lunch ladies and secretaries, who handed them off to other people who sucked the air out and melted the glass and then zapped to whole thing inductively to vaporize the better.
It's a wonder any of them worked.
