How do you think we got into the mess we are in today? We cleaned up a fair bit, but mostly when we off-shored the work we just off-shored the 19th century style pollution.Firestorm wrote:I'm not much of an environmentalist, but manufacturing practices back then appall me.

Don't even get me started on the Handford site where chemicals and radioactive waste is seeping into the soil.
Oh, and it sits right on the Columbia river.
I think that during war time, especially in that era, they thought lets get this won; we'll clean it up later.
The pioneers are all dead, lucky them.

Re: Tubes!
The challenge is that many small companies, now long gone, abandoned sites with environmental issues. Many are developable, EXCEPT that a new owner might be held liable for cleanup costs. So they sit. There has been some legislative progress, but no one will bear the risk unless the upside is enormous.

Re: Tubes!
I read somewhere that military surplus sells in "lots" only. They put the good stuff in lots with barrels of toxic crap so the lucky bidder has to take that too. Enterprising entrepreneurs make night-time off-shore runs and return unburdened.

I bought a pair of shoes from a drug dealer the other day. I dunno what he laced them with but I’ve been tripping all day,

That sounds paranoid.LeeMo wrote:I read somewhere that military surplus sells in "lots" only. They put the good stuff in lots with barrels of toxic crap so the lucky bidder has to take that too. Enterprising entrepreneurs make night-time off-shore runs and return unburdened.

The military stockpiled tube gear during the cold war because it was immune to EMP. I doubt they would contaminate their own supplies.
Re: Tubes!
I sometimes wonder if there are still warehouses out there that are untouched and full of tubes!:D
They made them until the 80's for the gov't and are probably still stockpiled.

Re: Tubes!
I re-read what I posted above and I can see that I wasn't clear. What I meant to say was that the auctions bundled things that were more desirable
with stuff that no one wanted such as barrels full of toxic crap. In order to get the good stuff you also had to take the sludge. Thus, barrels full of sludge wound up in Davy Jones locker. Ergo, three legged fishies.

Re: Tubes!
Got it. Who would buy barrels of miscellaneous stuff from the Pentagon? That just sounds like such a long shot. Rifles, sure, but they won't sell them to you. Jeeps encased in wax, back in the day. Barrels of "stuff" just sounds like trouble. Caveat emptor.LeeMo wrote:I re-read what I posted above and I can see that I wasn't clear. Re: Tubes!
State and local governments used to have stockpiles, taking their lead from the Feds. Bet they've trashed it all. Damn.Structo wrote:I sometimes wonder if there are still warehouses out there that are untouched and full of tubes!:D
