Hi Skyboltone

Yes we use the transponder interrogation/detection device where informations are sent by the airplanes to the radar after interrogation.
If a pilot swich it off we're blind...
The on-board transpondeur is quite powerfull as it kills a 7Ah glider's battery within two hours.
Primary radar used by defense are sending a lot more micro-waves all around as they are waiting the echoes to come back, may be the old ones you mention were using good valves...
A technician told me that the civilian radar antenna they put two hundred meters from our control tower is radiating less than the mobile antenna i have three hundred meters from my house.
the few times i switched on my 18w in the tower i didn't noticed any noise due to radar (even without grid resistor). different story with 50hz hum(single coil) and radio vhf antenna four meters above the amp (without grid resistor only).
I my house i have a sort of weeeoooweeeoooweee...slow modulated highmid frequency background noise. i'm not sure it's coming from the mobile antenna but it's on both amps.(one amp even got a 0.22uf polyprop cap across the electrical socket and i've put Y&X caps after the main switch in the house electrical panel)
nothing heard in my gainclone(hifi mosfet amp).
i will try ferrite...may be in the electrical panel.

I've had a transponder quit while in in Class B airspace and gotten an immediate call from ATC. One controller told me they still had a "Weak Primary Echo" so knew that I was still flying......and had not impacted with something. That was good to know. Anyway, RFI is a bugger to deal with. There are so many things out there that pass testing (Underwriters Labs here, CE?? there) and still put out bad RFI. My theory is that the test items sent to the lab have all the proper protective shielding and circuitry in place but that these measures suddenly get lost when a design hits the production stage. Funny how that happens. Anyway, there is no one measure that cures it all. Ferrite beads, grid resistors, whatever! It's a much bigger deal for recording studios than for the gigging musician.

Hey Sky, I didn't know you are a pilot? 8) I fly Cessnas and Pipers for fun (VFR only).

I'm medically expired at the moment. We live on a big boat and there just isn't enough room in the budget for two money burners at once. I've had a Mooney ($4500 annuals back in the '90s) and partners in various Cessnas over the years. The biggest kick I ever had in the air was 8 hours of dual in a Pitts S2A. Try it you'll like it.

I've got a Skybolt project in storage right now, hence the username. I think if we give up the boating I'm gonna go back to flying under the light aircraft rule. Something like a Pietenpol.

A Mooney, what a great plane, but the annuals....
Had an opportunity to fly in a Christiansen Eagle (sp?) at Oshkosh back in 2001, almost like a Pitts. take care.

hoho!

is homebuilt amp forum turning to aircraft homebuilding... :P

one of my fav is the CUB, a good hand-shake and just the instruments or controls you need to FLY. a bit like my 18watter! just take care of low(heat)carb

I'm learning aerobatics....still with the instructor in the CAP10 (great & forgiving aircraft) and i will love to fly a torpedo biplane (stampe,tiger-moth,bücker...) but here sport flying is vanishing...regulation...unextensible airspace...liners first

when the shop will be done ( my house is diy too) i have a Jurca Tempête plan in my mind.

skybolt, Eagle, Pitts....sounds good! great board!

Never flown the Cub. Lotsa Aeroncas and T craft though. The Jurca Tempete is a wonderful airplane that has many offspring.
As for the demise of aviation I feel for you guys, it's getting tough in places here too. Especially metro areas. Europe still fields some formidable competitors in the international competition though. And of course there are those Extra and CAP airplanes.
