As much as it pains me to admit it, the Yamaha THR are very nice.
I just picked up a THR10X, $225 on ebay. X is high gain metal version. I didn't think it possible, but it has a tubelike feel and response to pick attack.
The C version is more classic rock, jazz, blues.
