Black Sharpie overtop the white lettering. Voila' ..... fini. Easy and cheap.

A well adjusted thumb plane could shave off just the lettering. Its silk screened on top of the black.

I have had some limited success using either isopropyl alcohol or acetone in the past, but again would be concerned of damaging the painted surface.
As the others have said, it is probably best to either leave it alone, repurpose or cover it.

You could cover it with an adhesive label:
