Turning a Deluxe tonestack to a regular Bass, Treble, Volume

Got it done. I like it a better.
I did substitute a few parts due to availability.
I used a 4 uf instead of a 4.7 uf. Also for the .02 and .03 i used a .022 and 0.33 and I went with a 68k plate load resistor on V1 as suggested for more clean headroom and used a 220pF cap

I've only played for about 5 minutes but yes, im happy with the change. It's brighter and less bassy. The cleans are more usable now. Well I didn't have much clean sound before... And while it does sound best through my toaster equipped guitar...The low E string on a guitar with an Strat style Alnico 5 single coil sounds like a piano.

I just put in a 56k plate load resistor and also put a 12ax7 instead of the 12ay7 on v1. Sounds pretty good.

A little late to the party but my take. I was planing on building this after I finish my current amp (sidetracked by the guitar I am building). Ignore the fixed bias cathode bias output part, you can see the amp in 5E3 mode and in Blackface mode. Rather than having it switchable you can just wire the stages up as shown. Rather than use my tone stack values you use Fender's now famous values. Sorry no layout, only schematic. The addition of NFB also helps make the amp sound more BF. Also ignore the reverb section.

The NFB would make the amp just abit quieter, wouldn't it? I would actually lime to keep it the way it is, except maybe add just a bit more bass while retaining the brightness... Ill have a look at the schematic later on tonight. Unfortunately things like pots still confuse me when i see them on a schematic.

OK, safely with insulated alligator clipped wires ........... hook up a paralleled .022 with the .022 bass cap. Try that. If it works well, then safely discharge the amp draining the caps and put in a .047 bass cap instead of .022.

OR you could parallel a .01 with the .02 to have a .032 bass cap.

You could even reduce the "mid" resistor of 6.8k to ground to 4.7k to have it more midscooped. However, I would try increasing the bass cap value first.

I did try a 0.047 before i checked your reply and yes it is bassier. I substituted the 0.33 tho, not the .22

So, do the way the .02 and .03 show on the layout you did show them wired together tho? Would not that amount to 0.05? I have them wired exactly as the layout. i have a wire going from the "mid" pot to one leg of the . 03 the other leg is wired to the leg of the .02 and then the other leg going into a 100k resistor. So since 03 is the cap that wires to the "mid" pot i figured id swap it. I put the 0.47 there and bass became fuller.

Good grief! I was cutting and pasting that layout for you in a hurry. Please accept my apology.

Mid pot is actually bass pot. the 6.8k resistor to ground is your "psuedo not really midpot".

No, don't think of them as paralleled.

Leave the .033 to the bass pot terminal going to the mid resistor to ground. On the other side of the bass pot going to treble pot have a .047. Try that.

So I put a .022 back as it was bassy enough. The 0.047 is overkill. The amp sounds incredible save for some hum. It was pretty quiet for a bit but I made a lot of changes touched up some joints, relocated some components and somewhere along the way it started humming again...

I think Im going to rebuild it, redo the heater wires with a drill, go with non stranded wire as stranded is a royal pain in the ass to do any type of re-work, plus I ended up with an spaghetti looking wiring after the mods anyway, and I bet that is the reason for the hum. It really does sound great tho otherwise... Im really happy.

One last request... if you wouldn't mind explaining to me a simple concept I can't seem to wrap my head around...tho... Why is it that the wire I run from the 0.022 and the 0.033 leg junction isn't the combined capacitance of both caps?
