Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
While I was at the fabric store, I saw a couple of divider boxes that looked pretty good, so I bought them. And I got some nice trashy lizard-pattern vinyl for my latest amp.

Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
Anyway, I am going to get those boxes labeled.
In retrospect, I think I was onto something with the filing boxes. Components are so small, they should fit in there pretty good.

So back to the thread. I took some pics. My problem isn't so much storing parts (bins and tupperware cover me there), it's storing guitars and amps that is killing me!!

Cliff, I edited to make it a little more fair, but I was trying to prove a point.
So back to the thread, yeah, I put my parts in organizers that I bought from the store. They have labels on them. I figured it out all by myself.

That's fair man, I get where you are coming from too. Really this forum isn't the place for any of this discussion anyways, we've really just pushed what would be an interesting thread way off topic.

Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
This thread - the storage part, not the shit part - motivated me to buy some clear individual containers. The real problem for me is the large number of bins that are needed to store it all properly. We have one of these at work:

That is what I really need, but I can't see spending the money on it for my situation. The clear bins are a big improvement over the plastic bags and cardboard boxes that I was using. So, thanks for motivating me to get a little more organized.

Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
I tried stuffing resistors into the clear bins today, and it didn't work. If you have enough compartments to hold a lot of values, the compartments are so small, you have to bend the leads.
I'm going back to my original idea. I'm sure it will work.

Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
I went to Office Depot to look for file boxes, and I realized they were way too deep. The components would sit in the bottom, so there was no reason to buy a big foot-high box. Here's what I bought (see photo). It's for photos. The inner boxes are just big enough to hold a Mouser bag. I divided my resistors by value, and I had room to spare. The box is small, so it won't be in my way all that much.

^^^ That photo box is clever! I never knew such a thing existed, but now I have to make a run to the office supply store. Very cool. Thanks for the tip.
I put parts (resistors, caps, etc) in zip-lock bags labeled with values written with a Sharpie. Then I put batches of those bags in a bigger zip-lock with the range of values written with Sharpie. Those bags go into plastic tubs with snap-down lids and are labeled for component type(s). Stack the plastic tubs under the workbench.

Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
This is exactly what I do, and if I built more than one amp a month, it would be a major PITA. Cheap, tho.NickC wrote:I put parts (resistors, caps, etc) in zip-lock bags labeled with values written with a Sharpie. Sounds like the things I was doing before I got the photo box.

Steve, what are the dimensions of that photo box?
