5E3 Deluxe voltages?

Post by Structo »

Does anybody happen to know what the plate voltages a 5E3 Deluxe should be at?
This is a kit.

I have a friend I am trying to help over the internet troubleshoot his amp.

He has around 322v (that is with cathode subtracted) on the 6V6 plates, 22v on the cathode which I think is a bit high.

He has 200 and 165 on the PI and 146 and 155v on V1 (low?)

Right now he isn't getting any guitar through the amp and I believe he as errors in his jack wiring.

Thanks for the info.

The information I have for a 5E3 Deluxe is:

5Y3 Pin 2/Pin 8 (360) Pin 4/6- (320ac)

6V6 Pin 3- (350) Pin 4- (345) Pin 8- (20) For both tubes

12AX7 Pin 1- (175) Pin 2-(55) Pin 6- (140) Pin 8- (1.5) Phase Inverter

12AX7 Pin 1- (135) Pin 3-(1.5) Pin 6-(135) Pin 8- (1.5) Pre-amp

Thanks a lot Mark!

I was thinking his V1 voltages were way low, but they are similar to what you have there, so I think he is ok.

He tried it with tubes in last night and didn't get any sound.

I suggested he look at the input jack wiring.
This morning he said he found one of the shielded cables shield was shorting a jack (his words)
He is a bit inexperienced so I'm just trying to help him get it going.

It is a bit of an unorthodox Deluxe, it has adjustable NFB, preamp bypass cap switching and something else I can't remember at the moment.

The voltages listed are as close to an original as possible and his may vary or course depending on secondary voltage and caps used. Hopefully he can resolve his issues and get her fired up.

There are some "import" phone jacks with terminals in different order than the traditional SwitchCraft jacks. Best to just check with an ohm meter (power off amp un-plugged).

With nothing plugged in, pins 2 and 6 of the first tube (farthest from the transformers) should measure 34K ohms to ground.

Plug a guitar cord into the #1 jack and ohm from tip to sleeve at the guitar end. Should be about 1Meg ohm. Now ohm from the tip of the guitar cord to pin 2 or 6 of the first preamp tube. One pin should measure 34K ohms. This verifys that the guitar signal is getting to the first tube.

Kit type

Post by angelodp »

Hi Tom, which kit is that?? I am at this moment looking into a 5E3 build and was hoping to do it all myself without a kit, but the cost os hipping alone from various entities has me re-thinking that approach. I have heard great things about the Mission kits. Have you built a 5E3.

This was put together by a friend of his that operates a guitar parts online store.
So it is not a retail type kit.

I think the chassis and cab came from Mojo.
