Parallel Single Ended 6L6 Build

Post by ilkie »

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum here and am working on an original amp design for personal use. I'm thinking of a Parallel Single-Ended amp running (2) 6L6GC's OR 5881's. Based loosely on the 5F2A Princeton, the Gibsonette, and Dave Hunter's Two-Stroke.

SS diode full-wave bridge rectifier, (1) octal preamp tube, volume, tone, single input, etc.

Anyone tried something like this with pleasing results or heard of anyone making something similar?

All of the parallel single-ended amps I've seen use 6V6's. Is that because custom OT's capable of handling 6L6's in parallel SE are too large/costly?

My goal with this project is to wind-up with something in the 12-15 watt range with LOTS of even-order harmonic content. Something unique and full of character. And, above all, something SIMPLE and uncluttered.

Any advice, insight, or criticism would be much appreciated. Thanks!

That sounds like a cool approach. I like big SE designs, for the same reason--harmonics--but it can be tough to get the right OT for them, since most transformers available to DIYers are either intended for rerpos of old Fenders or hifi.

Matt at www.musicalpowersupplies.com has OT20SE that would work well for you. I've used his iron in lots of builds, and it always works and sounds great.

For a PT, you're gonna need at least 150 mA of high volts current for a pair of 6L6s, providing you keep their plate voltages in the 400 to 425 VDC range. A beefy Tweed Deluxe PT would work--like the one from www.tedweber.com or at www.allenamps.com.

Ted Weber has a SE OT rated for 25 watts. I put that in an amp that runs a single KT88. Monster tone!

good luck
