dr.z stingray question
the amp has 4 el84s any way to put 6v6 or 6l6 tubes in it. what would need to be cnfigured
Re: dr.z stingray question
well first of all EL84 tubes are noval and 6v6 are Octal.
So you would need to change the sockets.
So along with that you would have to make the socket holes bigger.
El84's draw more current than the 6V6 so you're good there.
Impedance wise you would be ok with the 6V6.
The 6L6 has a different impedance and draws twice the heater current.
May I ask why you want to do this?
The amp is designed around the EL84 so it may not even sound good with 6V6.

Generally - it's possible to run 4 x 6V6 or 2 x 6L6Structo wrote:well first of all EL84 tubes are noval and 6v6 are Octal.

instead 4 x EL84,
but 6L6 and 6V6 "like" higher anode voltage than EL84
and more drive from inverter.
Besides octal/noval sockets.

I hope you are talking about the Z-clone you built as I for one would hate to see a Stingray all tore up. If you have a Stingray you don't like it can come my way. They are the quietest, smooth, and vox chimey amps around. It is plenty loud enough to gig with and I do. It is pedal friendly as hell and don't even need a noise reduction pedal. If you want gain do as I do. A Boss pedal board with four different types of distortion, one booster following the distortion pedals and then the modulation pedals following that. Not one bit of hiss coming through.
SuperReverbs are great amps with the right Jensen 10 inch speakers. But if you go to the store and get a Boss digital reverb pedal you got a SuperReverb/Stingray.
I have a book that shows how to build a twin reverb so If you want to build one of those and leave your Stingray alone give me a shout.
Or order Tony Zottola Building Vacuum Tube Guitar & Bass Amplifiers VoLume 2 for this amp. I ordered vol 1, 2 & 3 and glad I did, some great amps to build. From Tubesandmore.com

Re: dr.z stingray question
If you want the John Mayer sound, build a low plate non-HRM Dumble with reverb. Putting 6L6s in your Stingray isn't even going to get you anywhere close to being in the same ballpark tonally, not to mention the fact that the amp isn't designed at all to use those tubes. All you will end up doing is destroying a perfectly good amp.

I know it's the opposite direction, but, still cool.

Re: dr.z stingray question
it is a clone. and really not intrested in the twinreverb. i wouldlike to see more about the dumble thing with 6l6 's
Re: dr.z stingray question
My advice would be first to go through the dumble forum looking for clips. Then if you hear something you like go back to the first post and read up til you're current.paisley_tele wrote:it is a clone. and really not intrested in the twinreverb. i wouldlike to see more about the dumble thing with 6l6 's

Re: dr.z stingray question
do you think it matters if i have a fender sytle bandmaster output trans in it instead of a ac30 style one. how much would that effect the tone. does it make it sound more like a fender instead of a ac30
