F&T vs. AmpMedic caps?

Post by JJGross »

I'm kind of a noob in the sense that I don't have enough complete builds & rebuilds under my belt to know which caps have the best reputation. I need some multi section caps for a couple upcoming builds and am shopping around. I found a good deal on some F&T caps, but also found some being sold on the 'bay by "AmpMedic". He claims his caps are tons better because of their size but is that just salesmanship at work or are AmpMedic caps worth the extra 20% or so in cost. It's not a ton of cash, but I don't need to pay more for Snake Oil if that's the case.

Cheers,
- JJ

I've not seen the Ampmedic stuff.

F&Ts are very good. I don't see a reason to pay more for anything.

Some of these electrolytic caps are simply relabeled caps.
TAD, Kendrick, Ceriatone come to mind.

They simply commission a run of caps and have their logo put on them.
Sort of like vacuum tubes many of which are relabeled for instance Groove tube sells Russian and Chinese tubes but puts the Groove Tube logo on them.
Some argue that GT weeds out the bad tubes and "burns" them in.
Don't know about that but I would rather just pay for a product once.

The F&T caps get pretty darn good reviews. Germany has always made pretty good stuff.
Spragues have increased in price dramatically too.

For an amp that may require four to six caps, I would not skimp on quality since they are the back bone of the power supply.
Even if it cost $10 more total for good ones, it would not hurt too much financially to get the good ones with a good reputation.

That's kind of what I've been seeing on other boards too.
F&Ts look like they have a good reputation and they actually cost LESS than the AmpMedic caps.

Seems like a bit of a no-brainer at this point. Thanks guys.

p.s., funny you mention the relabeled Chinese & Russian tubes. I have a 12AX7 that has Sovtek, Groove Tubes & Fender all on the same tube. They just printed Fender right over the Sovtek etch and printed the GT label on the other side.
Sneaky guys, real sneaky.

Well, Fender bought Groove Tubes, so the 2nd part isn't really a surprise.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...
