question

Post by bankey »

I have an opportunity to grab up a Peavey classic 50 head. It mostly works. The only knob that does anything is the master volume. Every other knob has no effect whatsoever...
The guy says it has been modded to only have one "bluesy" tone.
I though it might be a good project.

My question is:
Since it seems to have working transformers, a chassis, and a cabinet; Do you guys think it would be worth maybe $100 to buy it, gut it, and put some other circuit in there? If so; What do you suggest? I was thinking something Marshall. A 45 or a Plexi, superlead. Whatever. Something that does the "Clean to Mean" pretty easy. Something somewhat easy. I'd really appreciate some input on this. As far as sourcing parts. I have to learn sometime. I have Mouser and Allied catalogs. I have more bookmarks on my laptop than I know what to do with. I'm talking something easy to almost easy. Something I can play around with and tweak and learn on.

Defintely worth $100 if you are looking for a project platform. When the ecomony was better, I'd have gone for it at that price.

Well, since the Classic 50 has 4 - EL84's, I'd say you should consider some sort of Vox derivitive. A Rocket, a Matchless, etc. Since the schematic I have doesn't show any voltages, I am not sure of the PT is suitable or not. But the OT should be fine since it is tied to the 4 x el84's now anyway.

The peavey 30, 50, and 100 series combo and heads are really great amps!!
If I were you I'd consider buying it and rebuild / repopulate the PCB correctly then you have a sweet Bassman knock off with british output flavor and an amp worth $350-$500. Plus it's easy everything is labeled, it's not as glamorious as a marshall but you can still learn how an amp functions and get your feet wet. After it's up and running you could use it to gig with or sell to fund another project. Instead of a Bastardized Peavey Hybrid that no matter how awesome it sounds people still go .. yeah but it's ahhh was a peavey.

Just my thoughts

Wait a minute. Both the Classic 50 and the Classic 30 use 4 EL-84s? Hummm. Well anyway, Rocket candidate I think.
