Dumb question but can anyone tell me how to interpret the football shaped ellipses (treble pot and od drive pot pictured above for example). I am unable to find a reference for this symbol and Im not sure if there is a specific way these connections should be made. Thanks.

That is the symbol for shielded cable.

I think that the implication there is that the shields from those two cables should be grounded to the same place as the pot.

Note - usually, shielded cables like these only have their shields grounded at one end. Trim the sheild back carefully at the other end, and possibly shrink wrap it to ensre that none of the stray wires touch anything they shouldn't.
