Koch Multitone Mods?

Post by JBH »

Hello. This is my first post here after being around the forum for almost one year. I've learned a lot about circuits, and have only added/swapped a few caps in my Koch Multitone 100, and an old Traynor YSR-1. I do have a lot of soldering / trouble-shooting experience having built Heathkits in the 70's, and in servicing old tube communications receivers ever since.

Does anyone know of any mods for the Multitone that will help the amp cut throught the mix on live gigs? It sounds pretty good in the basement, but doesn't cut it in a live situation, especially where the guitar amps are not mic'ed. Obvious answer: I know - sell the Koch & Dumblize the Traynor...

I originally purchased the Multitone to replace my Mark 3 Boogie that has been my main gigging amp since 1985. I do have plans to build a Dumble type amp at some point in the future, but I figured I'd put out an APB for a Koch mod prior to selling it.

Thanks. Jeff

Hi Jeff!

I like people, who lurk around and read&think a lot before posting questions :)

If it's a combo, try üputting it put on a chair.
What kind of speaker are you using with the Koch? Just try different cabinets/speakers before selling or modding...

Maybe less distortion is more, when it comes to gigging...
100W tube watts is usually enough to cut the mustard
(or to keep the drummer down)

BtW: I would not hesitate to write Dolf Koch an email and describe your problem.

Ciao

Koch Multitone Mods?

Martin.

Thanks for replying. I have the Koch 2x12 horizontal closed-back cabinet with 90 watt Koch/Jensen speakers. I've tried combinations of the Koch/Jensens with 12' ceramic Tone Tubby, original Jensen P12N, with the last 2 together being the best pair. I also cut 11-ply birch into 2 pieces to form a semi-open back, which helped out a lot.

The clean sound is really good, the drive channel is OK, but the lead channel doesn't cut it. I've also tried many types of preamp & power tubes. I have backed down on the gain, so an e-mail to Dolf is a good next step.

Thanks again!

Jeff
