Sprague OD caps.

8) In my opinion, the Sprague OD's are great caps. As with any cap. the position they are used in makes a big difference(pre-amp vs phase inverter etc.)

Well, Maybe my words were a bit harsh...but the 6PS, in particular do not work for me in either the Express, Rocket or Dumble projects. They all had unpleasant (harsh) artifacts in the tone. The Dumble improved greatly after switching to the Xicon MPP, but they were way to bright in my Express build.

I just broke down and bought some Mallory PVC series. But I am still looking for the caps that suite my tastes.

I will be scouring the internet looking for the perfect cap.

Glad somebody likes the WIMA caps!! Thanks Germ!
I'm talking about the MKS 4 type WIMA caps 630V and 400V ...I like them better than the 715 Orange drops in ODS style amps.....the Orange Drops sounded dry and harsh in the upper midrange but the Wima sound balanced and open without being dry. Also the Oomph of a clean ODS is better than Orange drops!

Hi,

At which positions in an amp do you guys recommend certain caps...I've seen OD 715 caps at the end of the phase inverter in blackface amps a lot for instance...

I'm interested to hear your opinions...

BTW what is the difference between a MKS4 and a FKP-1 cap?

Thanks,
Jelle

MKS4 is Metallized Polyester while FKP1 is Polypropylene.
I like them very much.

OK, maybe this is a minor thing, but orange drops tend to be too darn big to fit into the small builds I make. Mallorys sound decent to me and are much easier to fit into a small chassis (I'm a point-to-point builder)

I guess it's all in what amp you use it in and what part of the circuit, but in my super reverb, it gave it kind of a dry sterility (418p) I replaced with the yellow mallory types and it seemed to add warmth and depth. More dimensional.
