What tube amp to build??

Post by Bernardduur »

Hey all!

I love the Dumble which was made together with forum member Jelle; it is now my main gigging amp and it really smokes every time I need it. It is housed in a Super Reverb like combo with 4x10 (Eminence Legend 102)

Now I got a very cheap Elk Twin Amp 60 that I want to use to add another tone to my rig. The Elk is an OK amp but not really special. Any thoughts on a new amp that would shine next to my Dumble ODR? It is meant to be run through a 2x12; dunno the speakers yet......

I read a lot on the Trainwrecks; would that be a great partner?

Add a TW and a pan pedal. You'll think you died and went to Heaven.

Pan??? Why not both :)

I use a homemade pan section of the Ibanez Flying Pan so that panning will be OK! A TW it is then

Hee Rogier, :D :D :D

Nice to see you posting here. So the amp bug has bitten you too? If you want a Trainwreck, there is a high gain version called the Express and a lower gain variant called the Liverpool. Both are cool. Everybody here will tell you to watch the layout of the origs very closely. Have fun and perhaps Peter Leurmans in Cuijk has some philips, etc NOS ECC83's and Siemens/AEG EL34's to make this work like it should.

Have fun!

He Jelle!

Now only to figure out what to build; don't know both models by heart you know......

What I read on this forum is that the Express is more a riff rock lead amp (w/ great responsiveness on the guitars volume / tone) and that the Liverpool is more a rhythm / single coil amp. As I use single coils most and am mostly a rhythm player I think I would favor the Liverpool above the express, but I love to hear some comments on this!

Oh, and the chassis I scavanged is great for both amps; it has the place of 2 or 4 powertubes. So that is no problem.

Hi Rogier,

I 'm from the Netherlands too and want to build a Dumble clone as well but haven't decided yet which one.

Seeing you're so thrilled about your version I get curious what clone you made !

Could you give me some more information ?

Thanks beforehand,

Alf

Rogier,
The Liverpool has plenty gain for most people and is indeed more single coil oriented, at least to my ears. The chassis that you have, does it have trannies for 2x EL34? If that is the case, you could decide to make a mix of the Liverpool pre with the Express powerstage.

Alf,
The amp that I build for Rogier is a HRM with a build-in dumbleator and reverb. The schems are on this forum.

Thanks man! I was thinking the same; what would be the advantage of having the liverpool preamp and the Express poweramp? The ELK had a trannies for 2xEL34's. (weird things go on in my head as I used to connect trannies and transistors with each other; on this forum I have to connect trannies and transformers with each other :D)
