Just for grins, one might hunt down a reasonably powerful solid-state amp for cheap, and harvest the power transformer. You're probably thinking, "that's nuts for building a tube amp".

A solid-state amp, bass or guitar, or heck hifi, of about 70-100 watts will usually have a power transformer that will produce something on the order of + and - 40 to 50 volts dc. That's 80 to 100 vdc total, with a lot of current.

Sure, yeah, you're still thinking, 'nuke has gone bonkers'.

But take that center-tapped 50v-CT-50v and add the voltage multiplier and now you're in the ballpark for a lot of oddball tubes or even EL84 or 6V6 output stages.

And you can pickup solid state 80 to 100 watt solid state guitar amps for *cheap* and you get a chassis, cabinet and speaker for further hackery.
