Tube size wars

Post by mhuss »

EHX/Russia seems to be in a contest with itself to produce the biggest, baddest audio output tubes. First the KT120, then KT150, now KT170!
https://shop.ehx.com/item/kt170%20tungs ... -tung-sol/

850/650 volts max, 85 watts plate, 11 watts screen(!) Probably get 150-200 watts out of a pair.

It'd be cool to build a hifi amp with those just to show off the glass, lol.

I don't see a reason to spend 800 bucks just in power tubes for a stereo PP, also not so linear (look the very incomplete datasheet).
It would permit to have a lower Raa, so an easier OT, and still be in the 160 Wrms area. But then... is it really needed to go that far?

I usually play music through an EL84 Hi-Fi I've built and that gives out around 20 Wrms per channel, plenty enough for my Klipsch.

I don’t see the point!

Replacing one failed one from a pair would cost more then a quad of 34s or 6L6s.
About the only plus side that I can see in terms of Hi Fi use would be being able with just the use of a duet producing like maybe 60 watts of class A power while being biased for class AB.

frick part of me is intrigued by these big tubes for a BIG geetar/bass amp (saves some chassis space not having to have 6 power tube holes for 6550s/kt88) but dang that's a LOT... scored a barely used sextet of tung sol 6550s for like 70 bucks shipped. $200 per tube is too pricey for me!
