School me a bit in tone controls

Post by Yoda »

So I have an amp that I added a tone control to, I simply copied the Fender 5F2A tone pot design. I’ve found that the tone pot does not make any audible change below the 1:00 position. Anything below this is wasted range on the tone pot because it doesn’t do anything else as you turn it down below 1:00.

I’m wondering if you guys could explain what each capacitor does, using my 5F2A tone control as an example, and what changes if the value is increased/decreased of each respective capacitor, as well as what the tone pot value does (ie. the difference between using a 500k vs. a 1M tone pot).

Thanks in advance.

I think this will help you understand how it works

Hi,
the link above leads you to a simulation but gives no explanation why it behaves like it does. A quite good explanation can be found at AX84: https://ax84.com/archive/ax84.com/stati ... cument.zip. It refers to Marshallish Tone stack but you get the idea. There is a short and a long explanation.
