A guy contacted me who was interested in building a Matchless Chieftain Reverb clone but using a board rather than true point to point. I made this layout from the schematic that's available and wanted to have it double checked since Im not personally building the amp.
There are some differences from the orignal schematic: high watt CC resistors are hard to source in all the needed values so we decided to use 2w metal oxide for the plates and 1/2w cc for the "signal stream". Power supply decoupling, screen and power cathodes resistors are lower wattage as Matchless uses over sized parts that are hard to source. Removed the standby switch and added a pilot lamp as well.
Here's the schematic I used: https://www.thetubestore.com/lib/thetub ... ematic.pdf

Re: Check my layout for a Matchless Chieftain Reverb
that's a lovely looking layout
I'm sorry I can't be of more help though.
I've always been tempted by a Matchless as I've a few friends who had them years ago who regret selling them.

Nice drawing!
Can you point to the schematic?

Thanks for the head slap. Certainly is an interesting topology, with two sets of paralleled triodes in the preamp, and the Bass/Mid separated from the Treble circuits. I want to play one!

Re: Check my layout for a Matchless Chieftain Reverb
Yeah I've read on other boards that the tone controls are kinda sucky on these amps but it's nice to see something that isn't FMV or Bax. I really don't know anything about Matchless but I can tell whomever designed the amp drew heavily from early Vox amps like using a parallel power supply and the brilliance control. The 22k load resistor and 2.5k cathode is an interesting choice on the reverb recovery and using a 20h choke, 1k dropping resistor and 1k screen stoppers seems unnecessary. I like that they used the phase inverter to actively mix the reverb signal.

Re: Check my layout for a Matchless Chieftain Reverb
I think the 22K/1.5K reverb recovery stage is only there to bring the reverb signal into the proper (inverted) phase before entering the phase inverter. Obviously, its not there to provide gain. I also hear that the reverb range is limited (doesn't go high enough). Some critics say it is wimpy. It might be a good idea to lower the 220K resistor before the reverb pot to increase the upper end of the reverb control range.
