Garage newbie - amp kit- amp bundle question

Post by JDavidAdrihan »

Hello everyone.
Name is John and I just joined the forum today. I have been away from electric guitar for a bit playing mandolin in a bluegrass band and recently have gotten back into classic/hard rock. I currently have a couple Epi Les Pauls and a Vox AC10. I am interested in some sort of Marshall that I can play at home. I have been looking at these two options: The Mojotone Studio One Amplifier 1 watt kit, I have built some pedals and would like to try an amp. I do realize this one is a bit more complicated for a beginner but that don't bother me. I am more interested in the tone and what cab to run it through. I also have been looking at this bundle:Image - so just looking for any and all opinions or a different direction to go.

Thanks.

If you want to build something I think that a amp more in 4 to 6 watt range will be far usable for you then a 1 watt amp.

Master builder Mark Fowler put one together a while back and shared his experience here Mojotone Studio One. With a suitable speaker one Watt can make fair amount of noise.

I can highly recommend a Trinity 18-Watt kit with VVR for lower-volume use. Awesome kits and lots of variety to choose from in the kit choices.

I would honestly go with 5w or higher build the Studio One will not cut it for bedroom fun.

You could build a two tube 5-7 watt amp in a 5x7inch aluminum enclosure, or make your own, or repurpose a box of some kind.

If your going to build a combo type amp, where the amp and speaker are in one unit. You could just use a piece of steel or aluminum bent in an L shape slide it into the speaker enclosure holding it with a screw on each side and your done. Easy to service and easy to make. No rectifier tube to mess with use diode rectification, one 12AX7 preamp tube and 6V6GT power tube in Class A single ended circuit like a Fender 5F1 has volume only or 5F2 has Volume/tone both usually have 5y3 tube rectifier but why add another annoying tube!

You could also do something like this, substituting a Marshall-y pedal for a Fender-y one:
