Reworked amp

This is a re-worked prototype amp. I retuned the circuit, roasted the cab, added new grill cloth, panels, and faceplate
She has a warm and hot channel, reverb into a 6V6 pair cathode biased, no feedback, into a 12" AlNiCo Bluedog.
The pine cab was torched to charcoal, wirebrushed, light sand and oiled n waxed. Nice water/beerproof finish. The ugly lines on the cab are reflections of the flash on wax in the grain, they are not visible live.

I love seeing the knots and rough grain of the wood. Nice difference from the rainbow if tolex colors.

"Torrefied" what the guitar manufacturers are calling it. Smoky looks fantastic!

Thanks, it was fun to do. I think torrefication happens in an oxygen free kiln, so the wood doesn't burn but dries out the moisture. Same as the roasted.neck on my wife's Tele. Wire brushing off all the charcoal you'd think there would be much wood loss, but not so. Total loss averaged 1/32".

Original finish was much more grain line elevated. A little sanding got it more interesting.

I did a very similar finish on a custom 2x8 pine combo...

I was very nervous about torching it. I had one spot that was kind of oily. It flared up in a different way and did not have the same “char” as the rest. I also had some weirdness at the dovetailed corners.

Overall, really like the way mine turned out.

Yeah, same as my finger joints. The grain is interleaved cross grain, so the torch hits half endgrain/half flatsawn wood, burning differently. Light sanding after the wire brushing helps even out the resultant level differences.

You could route an 8" hole in the top of that cabinet and get one of those big glass ashtrays they used to have on a brass stand at the entrance of Harris & Frank and other stores, back in the day. Place to put your stogie whilst jamming. Heck, might as well route a smaller hole beside it to hold an on-the-rocks glass. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

The way i overdo it is cigars and bourbon on the veranda, then inside where everyone washes their hands before contact with instruments or amps.
