Tonal effect of marshall tremolo circuit

Post by Roe »

I'm interested in how the old marshall tremolo circuit would load down and change the tone of a plexi. Basically, the viper of the normal vol was in series with a .1uf cap and then 93k of resistance to ground. This should load down the preamp and dump some mids to ground or?

I think that with the trem off, the transistor will have very high C-E resistance, so that can be ignored.
The 93k resistor chain and 0.1uF cap would be a full bandwidth load, so I don't think it will, in itself, affect the freq response much.
However, at very high settings of the normal vol, that load will roll off some low end, due to the 22nF coupling cap.

The trem switch disconnects the intensity pot wiper from the transistor so it won't play if the trem is off. The LF corner will come up to 85 Hz with the volume all the way up (22n into 1Meg//93k), so that will roll off a lot of low end on the trem channel.

It will come up even more due to the loading of the 270k mixer resistor, won't it? This explains how clapton avoided bass flub in cream

Not much. The 93k is already dominating there. Also interesting is the 500p is rolling off a lot of highs on the trem channel.

true, although not all amps had the 500pf cap. Still, the woman tone seems based on cranking the normal channel of the super tremolo amp and probably by turning the unused brilliant volume to 7 for max gain

The /T model sounds immediately different from the straight model. Interesting observation.

Clapton used a 1966 super trem in early cream (notably Fresh Cream) and later got a non-trem super 100 amp as well. After the famous gigs/recordings at Winterland/Fillmore in March 1968, Cream got new amps but even then clapton got a super trem. However, he typically used the super trem first in the chain, daisy chaining with another amp. Often only the top cabs were used (some pic show this). Also, Cream got new amps in October 1967 when they returned to the UK after touring abroad
