Tube distortion pedal
Behringer Vintage Tube Monster VT999 at Sweetwater for $49.99
The only thing I had to do was do some tube rolling. Dam good sounding pedal after you choose a good tube.
Did some tube rolling:
Telefunken ECC83 was warm good sounding
Ruby 12AX7AC5 was brighter with good distortion
JJ Ecc83 MG was terrible squashed sounding
JJ Ecc83 S was very good sounding
Tungsol 12AX7 was the best high gain tube of all of them KEEPER
Sovtek 5751 was the tube I did keep in the unit because it's lower gain and articulation

Re: Tube distortion pedal
Thanks for the review, Mark! That's a marvel of miniaturization.
What's the plate voltage?
Is it powered by 9vDC or what?
And finally, can you tell how much DC current the rig is pulling?

Re: Tube distortion pedal
I see room for additions
Thanks for the heads up. That looks like a great deal.

I didn't even think about all those things so I will take some measurements.xtian wrote:Thanks for the review, Mark! That's a marvel of miniaturization.

The unit comes with a 9v wall charger which could be run through a charge pump I don't know.

Re: Tube distortion pedal
Found a mod for this pedal if interested
It starts as a VT911 mod but it turns out its a Vt999 mod
supposedly tames some harshness, probably same as using a 5751 tube

Re: Tube distortion pedal
Cool thanks.
The pedal can have some harshness, especially with the supplied Behringer valve that came with the pedal. I also experienced some harshness with two other valves.

You can give a try to a JAN 6072A GE black plate (12AY7).

Re: Tube distortion pedal
Thanks for the lead to this pedal, Mark. Got mine and it sounds great with my JB Strat into my lower-gain Rockets. Lotta pedal for the money. Haven't even rolled tubes yet.
Re: Tube distortion pedal
The pedal is useful to get a nice tube distortion on a budget.
I took another look around inside but too tight for me to mess with taking voltage reading.

Re: Tube distortion pedal
Looks like great value.
I love the way the advertising says the 12ax7 is ‘hand selected’. I guess that means the assembly worker has a box of tubes under the bench and puts their hand in to select one!
