I thought that exceeding the max value for the input cap can cause surges that will screw up a rectifier and possibly the PT

Notice the 120 ohm resistor between the rectifier and the reservoir. That will limit surge current if you were to cycle the power switch with a hot filament.

I got tubes for my Stromberg Carlson SAU 10. I really like how cheap uncommonly utilized old RCAs are. I'm going to try both the 6L6 and the KT66. Besides changing bias, and different break up what else can I expect?
