I bought an old peavy valveking for somewhere around 100 bucks from guitar center a couple months back, and did the "mesa mod" to help out the distortion channel a bit. It worked great for a while but now theres some loud crackling. Its very interesting what affects it. Pulling v1 or any of the subsequent preamp tubes kills it. But the clean volume control doesn't change it at all. The distortion channel's gain and volume does, however. The crackling is intermittent, and chopsticking reveals nothing. I dont have the amp on me right now, so i cant get any gutshots, but im wondering if anyone has some suggestions. I had a similar problem with my first build and it turned out to be the rectifier diodes, maybe its that again?
Thanks,
Josh

Not really

Any Carbon comps in there? Can you bake them out for a few hours and see if it cleans up?

You can likely fix it and save yourself from having to get into it again down the road by just shot Gunning it and changing out all the plate load resistors for Metal film type, and if the leads will fit , step up to 1 watt types![/code]
