Hi everyone!
I'd like to build a simple power amp for a friend, who uses a Mesa Studio Preamp.
I would like use two 6v6s, but looking for a layout with EL84 too...
If anyone has a layout, or a link...
Perhaps there is a thread on the site...
Thanks

It all depends on the kind of sound that you're after. A Mesa Studio pre is an all round pre - a little fender clean and a boosted bluesy lead a la Boogie Mk. I.
I'd build a simple fender dlx power amp like the attached - power amp and PSU is high-light'ed i red.
If you want it 'stiffer' - substitute the GZ34 rec tube with (FRED) diodes and up the capacitors in the PSU.
Best of luck with your project!

Those two tubes also play different in regards to a amp without a feedback circuit even though they can both produce the same amount of output power.
The 84 will have more dynamic range then the 6v6, in other words the 6v6 will be faster to go into clipping once hit with the needed amount of preamp drive signal.
Also the 84s need less drive signal to get to that clipping point .

I highly recommend the designs here:
http://ax84.com/corepoweramps.html
Combine the input stage of the standalone 50W design with the 20W PP amp. Also use a better output transformer. That one in the design is a PITA to work with. Something with a proper multitap secondary like an edcor.

Yes, they use one of Hammond's "Hi-Fi" output transformers, but Hammond now has a full line of proper guitar amp transformers.MakerDP wrote:I highly recommend the designs here:

The 1750H is a perfect fit here (Deluxe Reverb OT) with simple wiring. The 1760H adds multiple output taps (4-8-16 ohms instead of just 8 ohms). I've built a dual 6V6 JCM800-esque amp with the 1760H, it sounds beautiful.
Amplifiers built:
Marshall 2204 head with some mods
Low-power 2204 (cathode biased 6V6s)
Single-knob dual-6K6GT amps using a Wattkins uPCB
AC30 clone with Plexified preamp section
AX84 Firefly

Yes Deluxe Reverb replacement from Hammond or ClassicTone will work nicely.
I used an Edcor CXPP25-MS-7.6k and it works great as well. I also used the Edcor XPWR163-120 for the power transformer. You have to special order them and wait six weeks but you save some $$$ and they are excellent transformers.
Edit: Oh I just saw OP is in France... so yeah finding a set of Deluxe Reverb replacement transformers is probably the best way to go.

I built many amps with Hammond xformer, and they're really good!
