I can hear my amp when plugged into a load box

Post by sonicmojo »

What the heck is going on here? I get very small tinny sound coming from around the speaker jack/OT area and I can also hear it in the load box, but I can clearly hear the riff I am playing. Is this something that can happen or do I have some sort of fault going on?

It is happening on three of my amps I just plugged in. I don't know why I never noticed this before....hmm.

The transformers vibrate and make an audible sound.

That two resistors in my load box sing also. I guess if you pump enough sound power into anything it will bounce.

Your OT windings are "singing." Amazing what artifacts you can hear when speakers aren't blaring.

Thoroughly soaked with wax or epoxy, some OT's don't sing so much. And those potted into shells like Ampeg flip top amps and McIntosh hi fi, with a layer of heavy wax/tar around them, they might sing but you wouldn't hear it.

Yup perfectly normal, in fact if that does not happen and you read the output tubes drawing major current then your OT is bad.

I think some of the Hi Fi stuff is potted, isn't it?

To prevent the noise?
