Current production 6L6GC choices?

Post by Phil_S »

Maybe I'm not good at searching, but it turns up nothing useful, so I thought I'd ask. What are you guys using/recommending in current production 6L6GC's? Thanks.

Groove Tubes 6L6-GE

It seems production may have ceased on these, but...

Not recommendations,
but here is a comparison of a few current brands from CE Dist, not sure if this will help or not.

See here:

and note which ones are tagged "best sellers." Customer reviews are available at this and other sites.

I keep some Sovtek power tubes in stock, they seem to perform pretty well and sound good. I don't go through a lot of them but the ones I have so far have been good.

All the TAD tubes got a pretty good review in Tonequest magazine a while ago, except the EL34, which was no worse than anyone else's current production, ie none were deemed really good. (NB, Winged =C= were out of production by this time).

Both the TAD 6L6GC types were rated pretty good. These are short glass earlier breakup and long glass later break up, no doubt modeled after the short and long glass RCA blackplates.

Personally, with the possible exception of the Russian 5881 (Mullardski?) I'd rather have used old US/Euro power tubes than new current stuff, although the Shuguang KT66 I have are very good sounding but unfortunately don't last too long.

I have a set of basic JJ 6l6's in my single channel BF Bassman head build, and I am very happy with them. Huge tight, thumping bottom end, sweet top end, and lots of girth overall. I know they aren't exciting, but they are reasonably priced, easily obtained, and sound great.

Aren't TAD tubes made in China?

I have a set of 6L6 in my 100w ODS seen to sound fine.

I really liked the Winged C tubes but they got pricey and then they were gone.

Don't let that smoke out!
