gidson ga5t recap

Post by menger66 »

A friend has a ga5t with 6x4 2,6aq5 12ax7 6ue7 I was wanting to try it oout and it wouldnt fire.up so iI happened to have my meter and tooltray so we opened it up...some one had reca pped it with 100uf in the power section and.47uf in the preamp so i wound up.recapping it for him with proper speck caps and that little amp really came alive. Real nice raunchy. tremlo. Now I gotta go back and replace the 2 prong cord with a grounded one. Its.got .e.thinking I need to build one of these I'd never played one I was pretty amazed a pair.of 6aq5, were that loud no clean headroom though. Is that because of the 6eu7? amp really starts to breakup filthy @ 2. Or 3,

A 6eu7 has the same gain as a ax7 but has a different pin out and can not be wired up humbucking!
The early dirt in these amps largely comes from the low preamp voltages used, low plate voltage = early clipping!

Cool I'll try raising the plate voltage and see if i can gain some head room. I'm in the middle of a pp el84 build so I might just build one of. These for myself

This should be the same amp as my GA17-RVT Scout, but no reverb. This is a great amp! According to the schematic, plate voltage on the preamps are 120 and 130. This one has a cathodyne inverter, plate is 211V and cathode is 50V. Power tube plate voltage is listed at 300V. With today's wall voltage running high, the whole amp runs about 10-20V above spec. I believe this improves things quite a lot. If you fiddle with the B+ ladder a little bit, maybe reduce the last dropping resistor to around 2.2K, you'll get less dirt in the preamp. This is easy to test. If the last dropping resistor is 4.7K, tack in another in parallel. If you don't like it, it's quick to remove it. If you do like it, you can just leave it there.

The best improvement I made to this amp (besides a cap job and 3-prong) was the speaker. I'm using a Celestion G10L-35. They don't make these any more. I got lucky on eBay. The guy had 4. I bought one. I'm an idiot.
