What should I build around this OT? (Triad S-149A)

Post by MHProd »

Seems to be from the 70s. 3K3 Primary.

I'm thinking a Plexi 1986 (bass circuit, shared cathode) with paper in wax caps for a different flavor.

What do you guys think?

Would be a shame to waste the UL taps, how about a RT 66, run it at 6.6K, with 8, 16 and 32 taps?

If its interleaved wound ya might want to go with oil type caps !
When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming like the passengers in his car!

I think you are in the sweet spot at 3.3K for a pair of EL34 @ ~400V.

That's high quality iron, if you had a pair some DIY hifi guy would get all wet over them.

You never know with untried iron but looking at the entrails the auspices are good for a Plexi, maybe very good. My only worry is that it's 50W 20-20K. Maybe too clean and tight? Maybe a 525V Plexi? Maybe one of those KT88 Parks? Maybe 4 X KT66 JTM45 super lead? The tube gods bless madness.

If the entrails prove wrong you can always just swap a Marstran etc.

Let us know.

Thinking about a pair of KT88 with something around 420V B+

Don't mind clean as long as it's not too tight.

That's what I heard sounds good from a very good ear . keep the b+ low under 400.

Hmmm, I didn't consider using it as a 6K6... I'm about to start an Express build. I might try the Triad...

OR
A quad of EL84, Vox AC30'ish
OR
A quad of 6V6 for a "mini" Bassman.

Either of these 2 options will give you around 30 Watts and both sound great.

Cheers,
Ian
