need some help with capacitor voltage ratings

Post by dragonbat13 »

This may be a silly question but I am still learning.

I have some film/oil capacitors that are rated for 35uf at 440 ac.

I am assuming they are not polarized.
I need to know how they would be rated in DC voltage.

I want to use them as filter caps in the B+.

They are originally used in large 600 watt floodlights. I have a pile of different values. I know they are big but they are also free!

Thanks for any help!!!

Check to see if either post is connected to the can. That will be the negative. Both posts will show continuity to the can, but one post will "count down" towards 0 ohms while the other one will show an immediate value. As far as voltage I'm guessing 1.41 times the AC voltage. Square root of two.
