Can anyone help identify this problem?

Post by Tpj11 »

when I uploaded the video it got mad compressed so you have to turn the volume up pretty high but yeah sometimes it's more of a wish sound then a pitch and sometimes it'll crackle or PoP before doing this, sometimes it makes it as you turn it on, and sometimes it will be fine for hours and not happen at all. Any ideas? Thanks.

That link is a gateway that opens a new browser window so you can "upgrade" your media player. It makes it look like it's an ordinary Adobe Flash player update, but it isn't. In a weak moment, I almost fell for it. I can almost guarantee, you'll be sorry if you allow that thing in.

I'm using Firefox and it is set to block pop-ups, so there is some mojo there that overcomes it. Bad $h1t.

You will need to repost that thing in a known reliable place if you want participation here.

Try changing the reverb driver and/or recovery tubes. If it's tube-driven of course.

i was thinking it was the reverb driver since it fluctuates with that pot being moved but I'm trying to understand why it would be solved by just giving it that hard tap, and how it can work fine for hours and suddenly it'll come back. and what do you mean by recovery tubes?

I think I'm just going to get it serviced but I dont have the money and I def don't want someone giving me the reach around and robbing me if it's just one part that needs replacing

and yes it's tubed 4 12ax7 and 4 el84

the head is tubed, I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure the reverb is solid state/digital. The head is a v3m.

Typically there will be a driver stage feeding the input to the reverb unit, and a recovery stage that boosts the signal coming back in. I'm not familiar with this amp, so it may in fact have solid-state driver and recovery amps for the reverb. If you have a spare 12AX7, you might try swapping it for the others. The internal parts of tubes can become loose and vibrate, and the fact that the reverb level is the only thing (other than the master) that affects it says the problem in likely to be in the reverb section. If there is a schematic available then maybe some more specific recommendations can be made.

Looks like the reverb is a modular digital. My guess is the problem is there... see this discussion: http://carvinbbs.com/viewtopic.php?p=410562

Blocked? As in secret? Well, at least they are providing most of the schematic.

Add some heat by means off a blow dryer to that circuit area but do not exceed 200 degrees!
