I know this is heresy but I did build an Express preamp that had 12vdc or 24vdc on the plates at a flip of a switch. It was still pretty freakin' cool. Picked up radio stations and cell phone chatter but that was because of my lead dress. My friends that tried it were still asking to play through it even with the extra noise.

Maybe Merlin would be able to explain the how or why. I know that he wrote something about it somewhere... I just offer a guarantee that it will work. Since it is only my $.02 I'm not risking much.

Matt is absolutely right... Follow the recipe, then tweak it a few components at a time. You will learn what you are looking for and others will be more apt/able to help you.

Also , there are some discussions here on TAG on the subjects of preamp power supplies, DC filament power supplies and starved plate ideas. Look for them.

Go ahead and post some pictures... The reaction from everyone here might not be as harsh as you dread. We all had to be a rookie at some point. I'm still a rookie.
