I got my first one, a Pace solder/desolder station, from Jon at Cusack music. Totally spoiled me and the hand piece finally pooped out so I got the Hakko. It's available with or without an internal pump if you have an air compressor in your shop. You can clean out a Fender eyelet instantly.

It would really make a project like yours a lot easier, works killer on circuit boards.

damn! that thing is like 600 bucks! but i bet in the long run it would pay for itself if you had plenty of work.

As with any item of audio gear you are in the end listening to the units power supply and how good that is makes a huge difference!
In the quest for that you should also by pass the main power supply rail filters with a super quality .022uf and a .002uf cap with a voltage rating of 25% more than what's called for.

Wow I'm impressed! I thought everybody forgot about Helios. Used to work for a guy who had a eight (!) Helios stereo parametrics in his rack. Verrrrry cool stuff! He wound up selling a bunch of them to Guy Charbonneau - owns Le Mobile.

I can't forget about Helios. It's all I think about. David has the remote console all the Zep, Stones, Purple, everyone recorded on that rig. I dare say there isn't a person who's ever posted on this forum who hasn't heard at least 10 things done on that rig.

This is the jewel though. I could make important noises with that for a living room.

OMG those photos are doing for me what Viagra is supposed to. DANG! Was that in the Stones' mobile recording truck? How the heck did they fit it in? David's a mighty lucky guy to have that.

Maybe you could "acquire" it the same way Johnny Cash got his Cadillac. It is modular, after all...

No this was the Strawberry installation. The mobile is in a wide rack format. It would have been parted out if the chain of custody hadn't been guarded by knights of the noise table.

What a difference a recap makes! we AB'ed a recapped channel versus an old channel, and it was like night and day.

I can think of a couple 'experts' who claim there's no difference between caps. You're repeating claptrap you read on the interwebs, or making up stories to fool the public, or having a hallucination.

Does the recapped channel sound better, or just different?

I have that same iron and I love it. Wish I had the desolderer .

Beasley I've done the same thing with compressed air works great for cleaning out holes in the pcb . just gotta be careful bout where that solder ends up. I've even used a lung power and a straw but all the guys made fun of me so I tell people I don't do that anymore.

Leo, i guess i forgot to mention that ive only recapped the electrolytics in the channels. i steer clear of any of the film/tantalum caps. I scoped a "recapped" channel versus an "un-re-capped" one and it looks quite different too.

Reminds me of the time I worked on an old IBM mainframe.
I worked at a small electronic surplus store and there were few customers

The owner brought in this IBM beast that was about 3 x 5 feet or so.
It had been in a fire and although mostly suffered smoke damage, I had to re-wire quite a bit.
A lot of wires had burned.

It was all wire wrap type construction.
Still used the 5.25" floppy discs. You know the huge ones?:lol:

I worked on it for about three weeks and was not done yet when the owner went bankrupt (hopefully not from me..) and closed the store.
So I never did see if it was going to work.
