Supro 1624 Build (Hammond M3)

Post by dawsonaudio »

Well here is my version of the Supro 1624 amp circuit with a little help from a broken down Hammond M3. It is really heavy with the field coil speaker and large power transformer, but that's alright. It's not going on the road any time soon.

Thanks to Smokebreak for the enormous help and his layout design as well as martin manning for the technical assistance (and everyone else). The amp sounds really nice next to my Thunderbolt. In comparison, it breaks up a lot sooner and has a lot more focused mid range in comparison with a little less top. I also plugged in a tonebender mkii and it definitely takes this pedal really well. I will post some audio clips once I have a chance.

Thanks again for all the help,
Nate

Thanks. I was contemplating using tolex, but decided to just stain the wood and poly coated it as well. I was also trying to find a handle that would support the weight of the amp. Mcmaster is local to me and had a steel handle that works pretty well.

I'm still wanting to put some type of metal lettering/logo or something on the front because my sons told me before I put the speaker in and the handle on top that it looked like I was building a tv.

Wow that cab is amazing! Great work all around, Nate.
I usually do plates in Inkscape. There are a few folks that kinda specialize in engraving for amp builders . BNP lasers is one(though I think she's only accepting Corel files these days). Lately I've had great luck with local trophy shops/engravers.

Never thought of trying a trophy shop. I've got one right down the street. I'll see if they can do the engraving.

The cabinet is made with 3/4 pine plywood. I used butt joints and 3/4 pine strips with screws to fastening everything together. I have a small router, but not a jig for doing dovetail joints. I'd have liked to have done that, but this seems to be holding up really well. Of course I used wood glue for everything prior to assembly and clamps to hold everything together until it dried.

The stain is an oil base from Home Depot and the poly is an oil base satin. I used a small piece of burlap that I had already for the speaker cover. The speaker is mounted to a piece of 3/4 pine and fastened to the cabinet from the inside with only screws so I can remove it if I need to. Under the burlap, I used the original Hammond speaker cover to protect it from getting damaged. Can't really see that in the pictures. I did do a quick black flat spray paint on the inside to darken it up a little bit.
