Auxiliary Power amp?

Post by Zombie_stomp »

I love my Ampeg jet reissue. I mean, I kinda wish it was old school hand wired inside instead of circuit boards, but oh well. It sounds great.

The only thing I slightly didn't like was that it is 15 watts. This limits the live performance capabilities of the amp.

What I wanted to do was somehow make an extra output from the preamp and be able to connect to a different power amp. I can't seem to find anyone else on the internet who has done this.

Who can tell me what would be required to make this happen? I just thought it would be so cool to have one Kim of heavy but compact amp that can be 15 watts or 30 watts with a couple switch throws and plug jack-ins.

I'll bet someone has done this before, I've just not seen any write-ups on it. Otherwise I was just gonna tote an additional head with the combo amp or something.

On the lookout for accounts of external power amps being grafted into combo amps preamp section.

How much more volume do you think you will need for the amp to be use full live, as here is how things work out electronically in regards to the volume (SPL level) your ears here.

Your amp is 15 watts and if you needed to double the clean volume to use it live you would need the amps output to be increased up to 150 watts!

On the other hand if you added one more speaker ( extension cabinet) and both the speaker in your amp and the second one where just 3 db better in there SPL rating over your current speaker you would than have double the volume and about Half again the amount of clean head room over what can be had now
Modern SS amps that have 150 watts of power can be very light in weight, how ever a tube of 150 watts is going to weigh in at some 55 to 60 lbs even if you use a new type Neo mag light weight driver!

The easiest and cheapest way to do it is install a slave out by something like a 10k resistor from the output tap going to a 1k pot. From it to a compact class d power amp driving a (pair of) speaker(s).

You don't need something tubey because you already have your amp that you can crank as you like, and add the rest of the volume by the slave amp.

Buy TUT5 from londonpower and build the super scaler from that book.
works great for what you want and is a very easy build.

Slave out is easy to do.

MaybeI don't know enough about how the amp works enough to properly approach what I think I want to do. Maybe the preamp and power amp are more tied together than I think they are and I can't simply plug the preamp section into a different power amp section.
So perhaps building another head like I'm basically doing in the other thread is the better solution.

For an effects loop send and return jacks put send jack at R12 and return jack at C12.

The loop breaks the connection between R12 and C12.

You can also use the line out as a send/return, sending the effects to the class d amp only. A wet/dry configuration.

Don't overlook the idea of tucking an SM57 capsule in the back and adding a small powered mixer/speaker rig. No mods to the guts of your amp, nearly zero risk, and in a larger venue, you're ready go connect straight to the PA.
