Some guys are just plain weird if the amp doesn't have (incert professional name here) on the amp they can't sell it easily in 2 months on Craig's List or Ebay so they don't want just any solder jockey building it. It also better have serial number 001 stamped on it too.

Wow.....this took a very weird turn for the worse.
I THINK the OP was sincere in his initial post.
I have a feeling that he misunderstood the post by Matt H...and then fate was doomed at that point.

Was his first post here, he may not have had any idea how incredibly capable and educated many of TAG members are.

When he said "hobbyist".....he was probably referring to guys like myself.....I can do some basic trouble-shooting, can follow a schematic, bias power tubes.....in general, I am capable of neat lead dress and following the advice of others with more knowledge than myself.

Yeah...he over reacted, and made some regrettable comments.
That's life I guess.......

Several of the most successful amp builders from the last quarter century are members that post here. It's hard for the uninitiated to understand the extent to which a 'hobbyist' will go. Sometimes they 'go' into business.

If you want to play nice here and get a clue, probably start out by telling Matt you are sorry, whomever you were, the dickhole.

You guys need to pm me when this happens. I don't get to read every thread these days. Just send me a pm saying "you should probably read this"

No! You ask us if there is anything you should read... be specific too.

<snip for brevity>
FWIW, I don't totally agree. Yes, I think he was sincere, and yes, I think he misunderstood, but he then proceeded to represent himself poorly.

A new guy should take the time to get the lay of the land. If he had done that, he'd have the context to understand what kind of guy Matt is and what Matt was telling him. No, the OP just took offense at nothing and then took his marbles and went home. Too boot, he clearly insulted some of the "hobbyists" here who can run rings around some so-called pros.

I'm all for the big tent. But people have to make their way into the tent in an appropriate way. I don't think that's such a big expectation.

How many times have we seen someone open with "long time lurker..." and proceed to establish himself in a very noble way or simply enter with a polite and coherent post? This wasn't the OP.

Maybe we will get lucky and the Mod will nuke this thread...

Hey I'm a "long time lurker" and first-time poster!

I read the first couple of posts of this thread the other night--it had stopped right after Matt's comment. I understood exactly what Matt meant, and sometimes I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed! It seemed pretty straight-forward to me: Matt brought up the simple comment that there were lots of people who are strictly only "hobbyists" but can run circles around some of the pros, they might be able to help out the OP--but Matt simply wasn't able to offer his services at this time.

It made perfect sense to me, and so I was floored to open up this thread a day or so later and see the responses that the OP had posted. Sadly, I've seen things like this somewhat regularly, ever since the 'net became popular.

Anyhow, I shall continue to lurk and occasionally ask a bizarre question, like "has anybody used an 815 Martian tube in push-pull for a guitar amp..."
