I need help finding a tranny

Post by LeeMo »

Not a crossdresser  , the other kind.
A friend brought me his dead 5506 Marshall. Previous "shadetree" repairs were evident . There were burn marks around the NPN transistors' legs and the solder had flowed out. The transistors were from different manufacturors and neither from the original Motorola. The fuse was blown. It was rated at 1 amp but someone put a 4 amp in there. I replaced the silicone and cleaned up the mess around the legs. I put a 1 amp fuse in and it went of like a flashbulb. I unsoldered the conections to the transformers secondary and the fuse blew. I checked the primary windings and found a short and an open circuit. It has two primaries for different voltage supplies. Four connections used with jumpers.
I need a source for a replacement. It Looks like it has been replaced before. The numbers are T4969c which is what the schemo calls for. It looks like a Dagnall.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I bought a pair of shoes from a drug dealer the other day. I dunno what he laced them with but I’ve been tripping all day,

You'll probably need to contact an authorized service center for this. Good luck!

"It looks like it had been replaced before". Sounds like you need to find out what's causing the PT failure before you put in a new one, probably the "shadetree" changes.

My intuition tells me that terrible soldering technique that lifted (and all but removed ) the solder pads , plus burned the surrounding board to carbon, was the culprit. The connections were flimsy at best, which led to thermal resistance, causing more heat...... and liguification of the solder.
As the amperage rose, the fuse blew. Replacing it with a fuse of four times the rating was the nail in the coffin. He said that it died mid-gig. I'm sure he hadn't played it that hard and long before, being a weekend warrior and all.

Thanks for the suggestions. :D

Still need help rounding up a replacement.

Hello LeeMo,

Do you have the center hole to center hole mounting measurements of the transformer? Also does the chassis have a flat mount hole?

Email these guys.

http://www.guitar-parts.com/

Tell them the make and model of your Marshall and have the serial number ready. They'll get the part from Marshall as genuine replacement parts and ship it to you.

Thanks CaseyJones ! :D
I had e-mailed Dagnall and received PDF's of PT's but I didn't know the voltages of the secondaries.
