Mesa Rectoverb 50 vs. Peavey 3120

I have a 3120 half stack right now. It sounds great and all but it is too big. I don't take it anywhere to jam with people because I have to take it up and down step all the time. This guy has a Rectoverb 50 combo that I could get instead, but I have to trade in my 3120. I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with both of these amps?

I need something that is more portable, but will still be able to hang with a band. I play mostly rock and metal. A variety of sound and tonal clarity is important. The reason I am asking you guys is because I have to drive 90 miles to make the trade.

There is also a 5120 2x12 combo pretty cheap by me, but not having a clean channel kinda blows.

Correct me if I'm misunderstanding you because I'd likely never touch either of those amps... but...

you have an amp you like. it happens to be part of a half stack (4x12) setup.

You're thinking of trading it for a 1x12 combo and don't know if you'd like it or not.


Call me crazy, but why on earth aren't you just considering getting a smaller speaker cabinet for the amp you already have and like? You could easily find a 1x12 or 2x12 (or 2x10, or 1x15, whatever fits your style/genre/preference) used for not a lot of money. A head and a smaller cab (smaller than a 4x12, that is) is, in my opinion, preferable to almost any "combo" amp offering...

I have considered that. Even 2x12 cabs can be somewhat expensive with good speakers. I've been keeping an eye on Craigslist. I like the idea of being able to move the cab single-handedly.

Unfortunately, these are pick up only, so you'll need to keep looking. It says the woofer is a 12" so you can see there is room for 2x 12". Make a new baffle and put 2 speakers in it. You can even cannibalize that 4x12 for a pair of speakers while you save up money for something else. This is a low budget, low risk project. If it doesn't work out, you won't be out of pocket very much.

Frankly, I've never liked Mesa amps. They sound good, but I always thought their playing feel/response was "tight".

I've always loved the Peavey Classic series amps, and the c30 is compact and fairly lightweight, but not a lot of options.

If you want a more powerful combo with additional functions, try and find a Peavey Prowler. This amp is a USA made "sleeper" that never had much traction in the marketplace.

I bought one for ~ $250. The reverb on this amp is as good as any I've heard, and the footswitching allows clean to OD, while the OD switch allows a choice of 2 levels of distortion, from the 3 settings available on the front panel.

Another "sleeper" is the Pignose G40B. Small, VERY lightweight, with 40 watts. The circuit is pretty much "dead nuts" Marshall 50. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but a great straight-forward rock amp.

I like the classic 50 300 is a decent deal

Depends on the music being played most young guys playing drop D or C use the 5150.

The pedal guys enjoy the Peavey Classic 50.

Mesa to me are terrible, but they sell lots of amps.
