Can anybody help me identify this old capacitor can?

Post by Unclepony »

Hi
This is my first post here.
I wonder if anyone can help me with this old amp I'm trying to fix.
I'm replacing the filter cap cans and I can't quite work out if they are two caps in one with a common ground (the can itself) or whether they are single capacitors.

There are two of them in the amp.

I have replaced the first filter cap which was a double with the can being the negative, apparently grounded through the chassis.
But these other two I'm not quite sure.
I have attached a photo of the text in the side of the can.
The line that is dark at the top reads 50-50 mfd.
The second picture shows the underside of the can. It is in the centre of the picture.

I don't have a schematic of this amp. It is a very uncommon 1950's British thing.

Thanks for any help.

Sorry, your photos are ambiguous. If I had to guess, I'd say two 50uF sections.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

The "Red Outer" marking supports the notion that there are two sections, with the one connected to the red terminal (I can't see any red, though) being the one on the outside of the roll. If you trace out that part of the circuit you can probably confirm.

How was it connected in the circuit?

was one terminal connected to ground?
are other terminals connected to power rail resistors?

should be pretty easy to work out really and you know they are 50uf sections
