Jon I would go with the KT88's or 6550's.

I have been collecting 120w and 150w transformers to build several bass amps and a 3 channel guitar amp.

Plus I got a 600w Class D amp module and 48v power supply to use with a tube preamp for a bass amp project.

I would do 4 KT88's

Maybe with a EF86 feeding a 12AU7 in the PI section to drive them properly?

Or ala VHT power amps: a 12AT7 driving the KT88's?

Lots of fun to be had there, but it definitely sounds heavy...

Hmmm...I've got a couple of 48V transformers, big hefty ones from a ss Rauland PA. Is there someone who would want to trade something for them? You know, trash for treasure?

I just measured the secondary lead wires with a manual caliper and they are about 2.5mm diameter multistrand (stripped, of course). (Water in the basement - big rain yesterday - can't get to the digital caliper.) By that reckoning, it is 10AWG. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is 12A. It ran a PA on a sea-going cargo ship. Heavy, too, 10# 9 oz.
