Re: Solid State 12AX7?
When will people finally understand that if you get a SS device to sound the same it doesn't matter because it's the FEEL and dynamics that are different ! I've had TUBE amps tweaked to where they sound amazing but i can't play them because they are so lifeless and stiff feeling. (not talking huge filters either) Then one small circuit change and that can change completely. I've had SS amps i felt sounded better than many production tube amps. Then i take em to a gig and they fail miserably for the reasons i cited. Aspen Pittman once said in an interview, and i concur 100%, "it's not that solid state sounds bad, it's that they don't feel right". Paraphrasing there, but in any case when i read that i said out loud "thank you !". No one ever seems to consider that side of the issue, yet to some including myself and amp with feel and dynamics that just kill doesn't even have to sound as good as most SS amps and can still be very desirable. Without great feel and dynamics no amp, tube or SS is going to be great or even good.
