Looking for a small project amp to build

Post by LesEpi »

Hey everyone. Happy New Year. I know this has been discussed before but the archive is reaalllly big. I'm looking for a schematic and layout if possible for a small amp with reverb to build. I'm thinking 10" speaker smallish cab but big enough to fit reverb. I would love to build a champ with reverb but know nothing about adding reverb to an existing schem. so I need an existing schematic and layout. Is there allready an existing amp with reverb under 5 watts. Like 2 watts would be awesome. I mic my amp into a soundboard and it will be trucked around a lot. Love to know if anyone has built one.
It's not lost till your wife can't find it.

Most amps under 5 watts don't have reverb. But ignoring the wattage you mentioned, a Princeton Reverb sounds like the amp you want. I suppose you could build it single ended or with preamp tubes push pull.....

But I'd go stock, and enjoy its full glory, if you ask me.

That book Tons of Tone or one of those books has Champ schematic with reverb.

Also, Hoffman forum has a bunch of schematics of lower wattage amps with reverb.

I was also recently interested in how people had added reverb to a Blackface Champ and there's a few interesting things that come up with a general web search. These two looked promising:

http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... 10&t=35226
This looks like a good start but there's problems. The first version has no mixer recovery amp stage, and he says it didn't work. The revision further down doesn't look right either because the reverb take off and injection are the same point in the circuit.

https://sites.google.com/site/ntasher/v ... amp-reverb
This one is more promising. It's more like what I would expect to see, except he says that the overall preamp gain is increased and he fixed it by using a 12AT7 in V1. No wonder, the added gain stage up front has more gain than is lost later in the mixer. But if he removed the cathode bypass cap it would've brought it back down to around the right value to balance out and could've kept the 12AX7.

Note that I haven't built this yet so it's not proven. It's planned for my next build after the amp I'm currently working on is finished.

Those look good.

Also, mojotone will make you a faceplate to go with their chassis just ask, the cost was very reasonable and they did all the design work which I really appreciated.

There is a thread on TAG with some information about a 3-4 watt push/pull amp called the SoLow Watt.

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... w+watt+amp

So you could consider a SoLow Watt and use a reverb pedal in the passive effects loop. Which would be my first choice.

The SoLow Watt with one tube reverb would be my second choice.

Hello -

I took a run at this a while back. My eventual solution was to clone (with tweaks) the vibrato channel from ab763 Super Reverb and run that single-ended into a 6L6. I was after the sparkling clean Fender tone with something lighter and cheaper than a Twin or Super. It turned out well but was complicated. So far it's been a one-off so I haven't bother capturing my layout or a schematic. Sorry.

Allen Amps offers this as a kit.

I also found a Garnet Gnome G-15TR -- a champ-style with reverb & tremolo -- while searching for a paint-by-number solution.

Wow that Allen Chihuahua sounds good!

Check out the sound clips, especially the Les Paul Hard Rock one.
