Changing grid leak resistor values

Post by beasleybodyshop »

What would happen if I ran one end of a V1 grid leak resistor into say, a 1meg pot to ground. Couldn't I theoretically get a gain boost by doing this? [/list]

Well if you drop the resistor and just use a pot it would basically be a volume\gain control

I recently put pots on all the grid leaks and stoppers in a 5 stage amp to "fine tune" out the blocking distortion I was getting. Very useful and helpful, but probably one of the most dummy ways of calculating R's... But hey, I got really sick of swapping them around!

Not at all a knob I'd want to keep.

A pot on your first grid stopper to V1 though, I like that. (With at least a 10k hanging off it) A 2 or 3-way switch with different values would be plenty enough once you figure out what's cool about it. Assuming you like it, anyway. Dumble uses something like a 22k? Marshalls and many others a 58k...

The world needs more knobs and switches.

You can use a series pot with the input resistor to trim for different guitars. It's a real waste but comes stock on those Rivera TB rack amps I like so much and I run it wide open for everything. I think WO is 1M :)
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

You mean a 1M at the input of the 1st grid??? That would be hella dark! I'm using a 500k with a 10k R hanging off it, and probably sweep in the 10-270K range for the most part. I don't know that Rivera amp you speak of, but so many amps are way too bright for me.

Is this control you're talking about on the leak or the stopper? That's probably my confusion.

Oh I diidnt see he was talking bout v1a isn't that what the volume on your guitar is for

Here's a pretty neat read on the stopper subject, and a 'lil on the leaker;

http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/gridstopper.html

Edit; reading through that article again, because I'm so busy at work right now, it's worthy of mentioning that I have a 22pf grid to plate in this scenerio I'm describing.

I just got his book, and I'm reading these online snippets... :roll:
