Hi
I want to transfer an old 100w head's "brains" into a custom cabinet I built.
What do I have to be aware of?? I don't want to be electrocuted doing this.
thanks in advance!

Welcome, Habernack.
The main concern would be the filter capacitors. They can hold a charge of up to several hundred volts DC even if the amp has been turned off and unplugged for a while.

You need to be aware that electrolytic capacitors can store electricity long after an amp is unplugged, and if you accidentally discharge this stored energy through your chest, it can kill you.

Thanks
basically it states: all you need to do is to turn the power off while leaving the standby on*, and wait a couple of minutes. All the caps will discharge through the resistors.

Essentially, I just unscrewing the chasis for the old head and placing it into a new cab, so technically my hands aren't 'inside' the guts of the head.
However, I will still discharge the caps for safety sake.

Do you know how to discharge the filter capacitors? If you don't, please look it up - Amps can have 200+ volts in them even with the amp unplugged.Habernack wrote:Hi

Are you just wanting to transfer the metal chassis with all the components over to your new cab or are you going to use a new chassis?

Then you should be ok as long as you drain the caps.

That's actually very hard to guarantee - that chassis is HEAVY and you're going to wrap your fingers around to the inside whether you mean to or not.Habernack wrote:Essentially, I just unscrewing the chasis for the old head and placing it into a new cab, so technically my hands aren't 'inside' the guts of the head.
Since it requires such a small effort to do so, be safe.
