i only get to do this once, so i want to do it right.
im using a set of toneslut trainwreck transformers that i have a laydown endbell on the power transformer. since everything comes out the middle, i'm a little unsure which direction it mounts. there is a copper strip on the shorter two sides and the longer two sides are plain. do the longer sides go front to back or parallel to the front and rear?
how do i do the headphone trick without mounting the power transformer. do i just put it as is and then hope when i flip it upside down and drop it into the chassis nothing changes?
I think it's traditional to orient the flux bands so they face the other transformer, but yours aren't quite in a line so the headphone trick should tell the tale. Theoretically, the z-mount PT flips the stray field 90 degrees so it should be harder for it to couple undesirably.
Be careful scraping off the lacquer. You don't want to short the laminations together.

It's like when people want to sand the rust off old transformers. Bad. The lams are mostly isolated from each other by varnish; if you sand them, you wind up connecting some of them. Rust, as it turns out, is not so bad. But I still put that Rust Reformer crap on them. I was just afraid you'd get overzealous in making the transformer pretty.
