Yes, I think that a resistor being in circuit will help prevent the cathode voltage drifting up, which has the potential to damage the heater/cathode insulation.

My experience - for info
- on a Parallel Push Pull EL34 Amp I found that with screens disconnected I was getting about 2mA idle (per tube) instead of the 45mA (per tube) it was biased to when the screens were connected.
So you can use screens as a reliable and effective standby and in that mode you will get very low output badly distorted sound, you don't get a complete "mute".
