Re: Solder Preferences
Kester or anything that's not ROHS compliant.
Great things happen in a vacuum
Re: Solder Preferences
Why not ROHS? What exactly does that mean?bnwitt wrote:Kester or anything that's not ROHS compliant.
Re: Solder Preferences
It means lead-free. Which means higher soldering temperatures required, more dry-solder joints, and a failure to adhere to anything that's been soldered with lead-containing solder (i.e. it's no good for repairs).
It's a necessity for RoHS compliance but a complete pain otherwise.

Re: Solder Preferences
Amen to that.
I also like 63/37 tin/lead because it goes from solid to liquid and back to solid within one degree F, about .032" diameter. Very precise work is possible.

+1 -- 63/37 Kester or equivalent (as long as you're in the US). Costs a few pennies more than 60/40, but it's well worth it.

I like SN62 solder, 2% silver bearing. Kester's got it. I prefer the Ersin Multicore SN62, but haven't seen it for sale on this side of the Atlantic for well more than a decade. Do they even still make Ersin Multicore solder? They had the best flux in the business.

I'll check but, i think I have about 60 rolls of it!Mr. dB wrote:I like SN62 solder, 2% silver bearing. Kester's got it. I like Kester #50 .031
Re: Solder Preferences
Hello,
What do you use to clean the amber residue ? Does a special solder material exist without this "side-effect" ?
Thanks,
Spinoo.

Re: Solder Preferences
I let it dry out until it's brittle and break it up with a metal pick, like a dental pick but bigger and not stainless.
I've never seen a solder without flux, but then I never looked for one either.

Ersin Multicore 63/37 Eutectic
MrdB, I just noted in Lord Valve's parts catalog that he has a stash of Ersin Multicore 63/37 eutectic solder for the downright upright price of $7.00 per one pound spool. Surplus no doubt, but it don't go bad! He's in Denver at
