10" speakers

Post by skyboltone »

Greetings Gents:
I don't want to beat this thing to death but I also don't want to stuff my new 4/10 cabinet more than once.

Eminence 1058 legend 10" $45 + $5 shipping x 4 speakers
Jensen P10R $64 + $? shipping "
Jensen C10R $29 + $? shipping "
Celestion Tube 10 $40 + $? shipping "

I've never heard any of them in person except the P10R. It's good, and that would be fine. The eminence clip on their site sounds like my memory of the P10R. I threw the other speakers in there because some folks seem to like ceramic magnets over alnico these days. I'm gonna drive that cabinet with whatever I happen to have around. Dumble Hybrid A, Matchless Spitfire, Trainwreck, and a top secret ( ) 18 watt project.

There has already been widespread positive comment on the 1058. Anybody know anything about the C10R or the Tube 10??

Thanks in advance
Dan H

The C10R by itself is a bit harsh. Mixed with the P10R, the combination works well.

The 1058 Legend has lots of fans, but I haven't tried it personally.

The Celestion Tube 10 is a cheapie (for Celestion) made in China. Only 94 dB SPL, but in combination with others, anything is possible soundwise.

I would also definitely check out Ted Weber's offerings, the vintage 10s with the small plug Alnico or larger ceramic magnets; the Alnicos I found sound excellently old-time, I have one in a pseudo-tweed Harvard I built. But they do cost a bit more.

The Celestion Tune 10 got a resounding thumbs down on the AX84 BBS several months ago. I have not heard the Jensens. It appears you are looking for a 10" Alnico type replacement, which the 1058 does well. It is a little more efficient than the Jensen C10R.

If you are looking for a more agressive or "British" sounding speaker, the Emi Ramrod is a pretty popular choice.

These guys also offer a 12" made with "soft parts" (sic) allegedly from the stock of Celestion's UK supplier when Celestion moved production to China. Cheep too!

The 10" looks like a 1" voicecoil with about a 20 oz. ferrite magnet. "Designed and assembled in the USA" i.e. components from somewhere else! But for $19.00 it's worth a shot I guess.

My guess is these guys are reconers with ambitions.
